The concept of eye surgery, or as it is called in the medical profession, an ophthalmic surgery has been around for quite some time. In general, most of the surgeries relating to the eyes can be performed by virtually any ophthalmologist, the most complex eye surgeries should be left for a specialist to perform.

Keeping in mind the delicacy of the eye and all of its components, one must remember that any surgical procedure must be performed in a delicate manner or else serious complications may occur. While death is very unlikely, what is likely is the chance of losing your eye sight.

There are many different forms of eye surgery. Up until recently, the majority of vision surgeries were left to the wealthiest of people since the concept of laser surgery is fairly new. Once the onset of the laser eye surgery began, the prices soon began to drop. Furthermore, today laser eye surgery is no longer considered to be experimental and therefore many vision plans will pay for them in the event that you are in need of one.

It is important to note, that while the terms laser eye surgery and refractive surgery seem to be used interchangeably, they are in fact two completely different surgeries. A laser can only be used in accordance with the latest technology, only for non-refractive procedures. In the event that you are in need of refractive surgery, you will have to dig a little deeper. When stating a non-refractive eye surgery, what this means is that the vision impairment is caused by a tear in the retina, and the laser is used to cauterise that tear, which in return usually restores your vision.

While speaking about vision surgery, it is important to point out that there can be both elective and necessity vision surgeries. The eye surgeries that are not considered as elective surgeries are mainly those that are in association with cataracts and glaucoma.

Now as far as the difference between reflective and non-reflective laser eye surgery, the standardised laser eye surgery is responsible for remedying tears in the retina only. In the event that you are in need of a refractive surgery, you need to focus on the term LASIK or intraLASIK as these are the surgeries in which the contour of the underside of the retina is changed through the use of a laser. These surgeries are basically painless and are usually over before you even realise it.
