Keratoplasty vision correction is not just
one procedure but a number of procedures which involve the cornea directly as a
means of correcting the vision issues. While there are some full surgical
procedures in this classification like the penetrating keratoplasty which is
the full replacement and grafting of the corneal, the vast majority of the
procedures are focused on shrinking the collagen in the surrounding region of
the cornea. This collagen shrinking causes the cornea to become steeper and as
a result corrects farsightedness.
Most of the keratoplasty procedures are
also extremely quick with the laser thermal keratoplasty or LTK being the
fastest at less than 3 seconds per eye. Furthermore with these procedures being
so quick, the recovery time is almost non-existent which means you will be able
to enjoy your corrected vision sooner. On the other hand one of the downfalls
of the procedures is the instability of the cornea and its tendency to return
to its original shape. While this particular complication is not seen in
corneal transplants, the remainders of the keratoplasty procedures do have this
potential albeit small.
Choosing to go with virtually any of the
vision correction procedures in this classification is for those who have
farsightedness and not for those with any nearsighted issues other than the
case of presbyopia in which the procedures have shown outstanding results in
the near field. While there is still much research being done on the potential
for correcting nearsightedness through corneal procedures, the average person
as of yet will have to opt for another type of procedure to correct their
vision.
Make sure you take the time to discuss with
an ophthalmologist prior to making any decision on undergoing a vision
corrective procedure as he or she will know what procedures will help your
particular case. Furthermore, having the necessary understanding of the
procedures will help you in making well-informed decisions regarding your
vision health; or lack thereof.
